“The Word of God is what Jesus preached (Luke 5:1). It was the message the apostles taught (Acts 4:31 and 6:2). It was the word Paul preached on his first missionary journey (Acts 13:5, 7, 44, 48, 49; 15:35-36). It was the message preached on Paul’s second missionary journey (Acts 16:32; 17:13; 18:11). It was the message Paul preached on his third missionary journey (Acts 19:10). It was the focus of Luke in the Book of Acts in that it spread rapidly and widely (Acts 6:7; 12:24; 19:20). Paul was careful to tell the Corinthians that he spoke the Word as it was given from God, that it had not been adulterated and that it was a manifestation of truth (2 Cor. 2:17; 4:2). Paul acknowledged that it was the source of his preaching (Col. 1:25; 1 Thess. 2:13).”

This is the most practical book on humility that I have read. It references many other excellent works, like Don Whitney’s Spiritual Disciplines and Jerry Bridges’ The Gospel for Real Life. It also summarizes his 17 practical steps to weaken pride and cultivate humility.

• Passionately committed to Jesus Christ (a heart for God)
• Biblically measured (everything by the Book)
• Morally pure (in a morally compromised age)
• Family centered (healthy homes are priority)
• Evangelistically bold (willing and confident in sharing one’s faith)
• Socially responsible (the community around us is our business)”

According to Rick Warren in The Purpose Drive Church, there are many who say, “If you’ll just stay doctrinally pure, preach the Word, pray more, and be dedicated, then your church will explode with growth. It sounds so simple and so spiritual, but it just isn’t true.”

George Barna’s conclusion, “In the aspects of lifestyle where Christians can have their greatest impact on the lives of non-Christians, there are no visible differences between the two segments.”

One pastor friend stated the “tried-and-true” method as, “If the 1950s ever come around again, my church will be ready”.

What impact is the church having on the community? “What we have failed to do, for the most part, is to bridge the Great Chasm.”
